Unless you are a total trivia buff, here are some things I bet you didn't know about TAG Heuer. The company was originally formed by a Heuer, Edouard Heuer, to be exact, but where did the "TAG" come in? It was put together in 1985, when TAG acquired Heuer. TAG was a high tech manufacturer of turbochargers for high-performance vehicles, like Formula One racers. The TAG stands for "Techniques d'Avant Garde".
Heuer is responsible for numerous patents in their early years, including a patent for the world's first Chronograph, the first automatic chronograph, and the first square chronograph. The components that they, and many other famous watchmakers currently use are the same ones created long ago. The Chronographic feature means that a watch can act as a timepiece as well as a stop watch.
Heuer was responsible for inventing, and patenting the world's first dashboard chronograph. This instrument was equipped with features that could track the duration of a trip for up to 12 hours. Their exceptional history of innovative ideas, like the chronograph lead them to be asked to be the Official Timekeeper of the Paris Olympics, a tradition that began in 1924. The company is actually owned by another luxury brand company, Louis Vuitton. LVMH purchased 50.1% of the companies stock in 1999, for an estimated $730 million. This is a union that has meant success for all involved.
TAG Heuer has deep roots in the Formula 1 world. The companies first Ambassador was Formula 1 driver Jo Siffert, back in 1969. The watchmakers Formula One Calibre is one of TAG Heuer's most famous Chronographs. The Formula One has been said to be the easiest to read chrono because of its electro mechanical movement, patented by them. This timepiece is accurate to within 100th of a second.
Another Formula One version is the Formula 1 Grande Date. The Grande Date features six of the legendary TAG Heuer fundamentals. A unidirectional steel carbide coated bezel, water resistance to 200 meters, hour markers and hands in a luminescent finish, a scratch resistant sapphire crystal, a bracelet crafted with an extender and a double safety clasp, and a "Easy-Grip" screw in crown. These are just two of the amazing Formula 1 timepieces by TAG Heuer.
The 2007 award for best product design went to TAG Heuer for their Monaco Calibre 360 LS Concept Chronograph. This watch went up against 2,200 other timepieces and came away the winner.
